Following tooth extraction Dr. Annissa Michael will provide post-op instructions to help you recover. These instructions include:
- Bite firmly on a gauze pad for 45 minutes following the procedure to aid in clot formation. If bleeding persists, replace with a fresh gauze pad and continue pressure for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary. This will help ensure a blood clot forms to stop bleeding and begin the healing process.
- Refrain from rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Avoid touching the socket or surgical area with your fingers or tongue.
- Apply ice packs to the side of your face for 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for the initial 48 hours. Frozen peas can serve as effective ice packs.
- Manage mild discomfort with Tylenol and ibuprofen as indicated on the provided pain management sheet.
- For severe pain, utilize prescribed medication if applicable.
- Stay hydrated by consuming plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw to prevent suction that may lead to complications.
- Abstain from smoking for at least 5 days post-surgery.
- Avoid strenuous activities and refrain from exercising for 3 to 4 days following the procedure. Afterwards, proceed with caution due to potential reduced caloric and fluid intake, which may cause light-headedness, dizziness or weakness.
- If jaw muscles become stiff, apply warm moist heat to the affected area to promote relaxation.
- From the day after surgery, use warm salt water rinses after meals for a week to flush out any food particles and debris from the surgical area. Mix ½ teaspoon of salt in warm water, optionally adding non-alcohol mouthwash for taste.
- Consume a diet primarily consisting of soft, easily swallowed foods and cool beverages. Avoid foods like seeds, nuts, rice, popcorn or anything that might become lodged in your teeth.
